Dharamsala is the home of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile. McLeod Ganj, just 10 km up the hill, has evolved into one of India's most unique travel destinations. Here is your complete guide.
Dharamsala sits at 1,457 metres in the Kangra Valley of Himachal Pradesh, with Dhauladhar peaks rising dramatically to 4,000m immediately behind the town. McLeod Ganj, the upper town, is the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile and home to the Dalai Lama.
Getting There from North India
Delhi to Dharamsala: 475 km, approximately 10 hours. Bareilly to Dharamsala: 600+ km, 12 hours (overnight or split into 2 days). Chandigarh to Dharamsala: 235 km, 5 hours. SUV strongly recommended — the final descent into Kangra Valley is steep.
Top Experiences
Namgyal Monastery & Tsuglagkhang Complex: The Dalai Lama's personal monastery, open to visitors. A morning puja (prayer ceremony) here is deeply moving.
Bhagsu Nag Waterfall: 2 km trek from McLeod Ganj. Easy walk through a pine forest to a beautiful 30-metre waterfall. Extremely popular — go early.
Triund Trek: 9 km trek from McLeod Ganj to a meadow at 2,875m with front-row views of the Dhauladhar range. Best overnight camping trek near Delhi.
Tibet Museum: Documents the Tibetan people's struggle and history in a dignified, moving exhibition.
Best Time
March–June and September–November. July–August is monsoon — Bhagsu Falls is spectacular but Triund trek is too slippery.
