Chopta is a tiny hamlet at 2,680 metres in the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary — meadows of rhododendron, the world's highest Shiva temple, and perhaps the clearest Himalayan views in Garhwal.
Chopta is one of Uttarakhand's best-kept secrets. Located in Rudraprayag district at 2,680 metres, it is a launching pad for the Tungnath trek — leading to the world's highest Shiva temple. The meadows are carpeted in rhododendrons in April.
Getting There
Delhi to Chopta: 450 km via Rishikesh, Devprayag, Ukhimath. Approximately 10 hours. Bareilly to Chopta: 390 km, 9 hours. Rishikesh to Chopta: 200 km, 5 hours. SUV or Innova recommended for the final mountain stretch.
The Tungnath & Chandrashila Trek
From Chopta, it is a 3.5 km trek (1.5 hours) to Tungnath temple — at 3,680 metres, the highest Shiva temple in the world. Continue another 1.5 km (45 minutes) to Chandrashila Peak (4,130m) for a 360-degree panorama of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, and Kedarnath peaks. One of the finest views in India.
Best Time to Visit
April–June: Rhododendrons in bloom, snow patches on trail, clear skies.
October–November: Post-monsoon crystal clarity, snowfall begins.
December–March: Deep snow — only for experienced trekkers.
Where to Stay
GMVN Tourist Rest House at Chopta. A few private guesthouses. All basic — this is remote wilderness camping at heart. Bring warm layers even in June.
