Logistics: Getting There Early
From Delhi: Leave by 3:30 AM to arrive at 6:30 AM (gate opens 30 minutes before sunrise). From Agra city: A 10-minute cab ride from your hotel, leaving by 5:45 AM. From Bareilly: Leave by 2 AM to arrive at sunrise — best to stay overnight in Agra.
Which Gate to Use
Use the East Gate or West Gate. Never the South Gate — it is the most famous but has the longest queues. The East Gate is the quietest. You can see the main white dome framed in the gateway arch as you approach — a moment that stays with you.
Tickets & Entry
Book at tickets.asi.gov.in the night before. Indian: ₹50 + ₹200 for the main mausoleum entry. Foreign national: ₹1,100. Friday is closed for non-Muslims. The complex opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset.
The Best Viewing Spots
The main avenue fountain pool: Classic reflection shot. Best in early morning mist.
Inside the mausoleum: The cenotaphs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal. The inlay work in semi-precious stones is extraordinary up close.
Mehtab Bagh across the river: For the sunset view from the north bank — a very different, quieter perspective.
